The BoardElegance™ Book

A continuing inquiry into what it means to govern well

The Five Tenors

Governance rarely presents itself as a collection of pristine choices.

Boards work with incomplete information, competing responsibilities and different perspectives. Their decisions may carry consequences well beyond the tenure of those making them.

The BoardElegance™ book inhabits that territory.

It brings wisdom across time into conversation with lived boardroom experience, exploring what stewardship asks of those temporarily entrusted with institutions, purposes, resources and relationships.

It offers language, perspective and provocation through which readers may deepen their own inquiry.

Wisdom in conversation with experience

Questions of authority, power, responsibility, legitimacy and conscience have occupied human thought across centuries.

Their circumstances change. Their relevance endures.

The book draws upon philosophy, history, literature, theology, political and social thought, alongside contemporary governance experience. It considers how these sources might illuminate one another—and what becomes visible when familiar boardroom questions are viewed from a different vantage point.

What makes authority legitimate?
How does power operate beyond formal structures?
What warrants attention when a decision is technically defensible, yet something remains unresolved?
What are we preserving, what may need to change, and what might our choices set in motion for those who follow?

Inherited wisdom provides orientation. Experience brings consequence into view. Reflection and dialogue allow each to test and enrich the other.

The Five Tenors

At the centre of the book are The Five Tenors: enduring dimensions of stewardship through which contemporary governance can be examined.

Together, they bring attention to:

  1. inquiry and the assumptions shaping what a board can see;

  2. authority, power and the exercise of influence;

  3. conscience and moral pressure;

  4. institutional responsibility and consequence; and

  5. the collective capacity to think, discern and adapt.

The Tenors are lenses for inquiry. Each draws attention to dimensions of a situation that might otherwise remain beneath the surface; each gains depth through its relationship with the others.

They hold enduring questions while leaving room for interpretation, changing circumstances and thoughtful movement.

Reading with your own questions

The book respects the experience, intelligence and judgement of its readers.

It is not a governance manual, a catalogue of best practice or a substitute for formal director education. It does not prescribe what a director should think or what a board should decide.

Its invitation is to notice more closely: the assumptions shaping a question, the voices influencing it, the authority surrounding it, and the consequences extending from it.

Some ideas may resonate with experience. Others may unsettle a familiar interpretation or bring a previously unspoken concern into clearer view.

The reader retains responsibility for what to make of them.

A book that stands on its own

The book is the intellectual keystone of the BoardElegance body of work. It stands independently of the other offerings and may be read without participating in any of them.

Its purpose is to support a continuing inquiry into how responsibility is carried—and what thoughtful stewardship might require.

Because there is no final state of having governed well.

There is only the continuing practice of stewardship.
